Cotopaxi National Park

Cotopaxi National Park, established in 1975, protects one of the most iconic volcanic landscapes in the Ecuadorian Andes. Dominated by the active Cotopaxi Volcano, its geological history has shaped vast pƔramo plains and glacial valleys. This high-altitude ecosystem hosts flora adapted to extreme conditions, including hardy grasses, chuquiragua shrubs, and cushion plants that withstand cold temperatures and intense solar radiation. The fauna features emblematic species such as the Andean condor, deer, foxes, and occasionally pumas, along with waterfowl inhabiting lagoons like Limpiopungo. The park plays a vital role in water regulation and the preservation of Andean biodiversity. Historically, it was inhabited and utilized by indigenous communities who relied on its natural resources. Today, it is a key destination for tourism and scientific research, where volcanic and glacial processes are studied, as well as ecosystem resilience in the face of ongoing climate change.
