Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, founded in 1536 and refounded in 1580, developed as a key port of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata and later as Argentina's capital. Its urban ecosystem connects with the Río de la Plata estuary, creating wetlands, riverbanks, and parks. Flora includes jacaranda, tipu trees, and ceibo, the national tree. Urban fauna features birds such as horneros, kiskadees, and herons, along with bats and small mammals. Areas like the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur preserve biodiversity amid metropolitan growth.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, has a history dating back to its first foundation in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza and its reestablishment in 1580. Over time, it became a vital port along the Río de la Plata and the nation's political, cultural, and economic hub. Its ecosystem lies within the Pampas plain, known for fertile soils and a humid temperate climate. The city's flora features jacaranda, tipu trees, and ceibo, adorning avenues and green spaces like Palermo Woods. Urban fauna includes birds such as sparrows, pigeons, horneros, and parrots, along with small mammals adapted to city life. In riverside areas like the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, native biodiversity thrives with wetlands, grasslands, and lagoons that provide habitat for numerous species, illustrating the balance between urban development and natural preservation.

Obelisk of Buenos Aires

The Obelisk of Buenos Aires, an iconic city landmark, was inaugurated in 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires' first foundation. Designed by architect Alberto Prebisch, it rises 67.5 meters at the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Corrientes. Built in record time, it reflects the era's modernizing spirit. Throughout its history, it has hosted celebrations, protests, and cultural events, becoming a central urban reference point and a powerful symbol of Buenos Aires' identity.
