Milford Fjord

Milford Fjord, located within Fiordland National Park, was carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age and is one of New Zealand's most iconic natural landscapes. Surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls, and temperate rainforests, it supports remarkable biodiversity. Its unique layers of freshwater and seawater create ideal conditions for black corals, dolphins, seals, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin. Recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it remains an outstanding sanctuary for the protection of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Milford Fjord

Milford Sound, located within Fiordland National Park in southwestern New Zealand, was carved by massive glaciers during the last Ice Age over 100,000 years ago. Known to the Māori as Piopiotahi, it features towering cliffs, permanent waterfalls, and deep waters shaped by abundant rainfall. Its unique ecosystem combines a surface layer of freshwater with seawater below, allowing black corals, sponges, and sea anemones to thrive at unusually shallow depths. The fiord also provides habitat for dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins, and numerous native bird species. This remarkable landscape is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Area, celebrated worldwide for its outstanding biodiversity and spectacular natural beauty.

Milford Fjord

Milford Fjord, located within Fiordland National Park on New Zealand's South Island, is one of the nation's most spectacular natural landmarks. Carved by massive glaciers approximately two million years ago, the fjord features towering granite cliffs, permanent waterfalls, and the iconic Mitre Peak rising dramatically above the water. Known to the Māori as Piopiotahi, the area holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. Its ecosystem combines temperate rainforest, alpine mountains, and a unique marine environment. Exceptionally high rainfall creates a surface layer of freshwater that allows rare black corals to thrive at unusually shallow depths, a remarkable ecological phenomenon. Wildlife includes bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins, and numerous endemic bird species inhabiting the surrounding forests. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Milford Sound represents one of the world's finest examples of glacial landscapes while serving as an invaluable sanctuary for biodiversity, scientific research, environmental conservation, and sustainable nature tourism.

Milford Track

Milford Track, regarded as the heart of Fiordland National Park, is one of New Zealand's most celebrated hiking trails. For centuries, Māori people used the route to reach valuable natural resources before European explorers documented it in the late nineteenth century. Stretching 53.5 kilometres, the trail crosses temperate rainforests, glacial valleys, crystal-clear rivers, and spectacular waterfalls, including Sutherland Falls. Its remarkable ecosystem supports southern beech forests, ferns, mosses, and endemic wildlife such as the kea and the whio, all carefully protected within the internationally recognized Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area.
