Waikiki, located on the southern coast of Oahu, Hawaii, was originally a vast wetland system of streams, ponds, and fishponds traditionally managed by Native Hawaiian royalty for aquaculture. Before modern development, the area supported rich coastal ecosystems with high biodiversity. In the early 20th century, large scale tourism development and the channelization of streams such as the Ala Wai dramatically reshaped the landscape, reducing wetlands and altering natural water flow. Today, Waikiki is a highly urbanized tropical coastal environment, yet it still retains ecological significance. Its flora includes coconut palms, hibiscus, pandanus, and other salt and sand tolerant plants adapted to coastal conditions. Nearby marine fauna includes reef fish, sea urchins, green sea turtles, and occasional dolphins. On land, introduced birds like mynas coexist with a few adapted native species. Ongoing conservation efforts aim to improve water quality, restore coral reef health, and enhance urban ecological resilience.
