Port Market
The Port Market, inaugurated in 1868 in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja, reflects European influence through its imported iron structure. Originally a supply market, it gradually evolved into a renowned gastronomic hub. Although it is an urban setting, its immediate ecosystem includes birds such as pigeons and sparrows, along with scarce vegetation adapted to the coastal climate of the RĂo de la Plata. Its proximity to the harbor encourages sea breezes, creating a humid, saline microenvironment shaped by constant interaction between natural elements and urban activity.

Port Market
The Port Market, inaugurated in 1868 in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja district, is a historic landmark featuring iron and glass architecture inspired by 19th-century European design. Originally a fresh food market, it gradually evolved into a renowned culinary hub, especially known for traditional grilled meats. Although located in an urban setting, it is connected to the RĂo de la Plata coastal ecosystem, where bird species such as seagulls and pigeons are common, along with vegetation adapted to a temperate climate. Its proximity to the harbor reflects a blend of human activity and natural elements, highlighting cultural heritage alongside urban biodiversity.

Port Market
The Port Market, in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja, began as a private initiative led by Pedro Sáenz de Zumarán and was inaugurated in 1868. Its iron structure, built in Liverpool, made it a landmark of nineteenth-century commercial architecture and one of the city's most important heritage icons. Over time, it evolved from a supply market into a lively gastronomic and cultural hub. Its surroundings are shaped by the historic old-town fabric, the waterfront promenade, and the nearby RĂo de la Plata, a coastal setting influenced by estuarine conditions, wind, salt, and changing water dynamics. The nearby flora is mainly urban and resilient, with street trees, planters, and scattered coastal vegetation; the fauna is dominated by urban and waterfront birds, reflecting a broader ecological transition between the city and the shoreline

Zabala Square
The Zabala Square, located in Ciudad Vieja near the Mercado del Puerto, is one of Montevideo's most historically significant public spaces. It was inaugurated on December 31, 1890, on the former site of the Fuerte Grande, a key colonial defensive structure. Designed by French landscape architect Édouard André, the square reflects Belle Époque European garden influences, evident in its elegant and irregular layout. At its center stands an equestrian statue of Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, the city's founder. Declared a National Historic Monument, it preserves original iron fences and represents Montevideo's urban and cultural transformation over time.
