San Pedro of Atacama

The oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, inhabited since pre-Hispanic times by the AtacameƱo or Lickanantay culture, was a key caravan hub in the world's driest desert, the Atacama Desert. Its ecosystem blends salt flats, high-altitude lagoons, and volcanoes, with flora such as llareta, tamarugo trees, and cacti. Wildlife includes flamingos, vicuƱas, and desert foxes. Extreme aridity and wide temperature ranges have shaped a unique environment of great scientific and tourist value.

San Pedro of Atacama

San Pedro of Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama is an ancient oasis in northern Chile, inhabited by AtacameƱo or Lickanantay cultures for over a thousand years. In pre-Hispanic times, it served as a key caravan trade hub linking the Andes and the Altiplano. With the Spanish arrival in the 16th century, it became a colonial settlement, still preserving its adobe architecture. Its ecosystem belongs to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest on Earth. Vegetation includes llareta, tamarugo trees, and cacti, while wildlife features flamingos, vicuƱas, and foxes. Nearby salt flats, volcanoes, and geysers create a unique, fragile landscape of high scientific and tourism value today.

San Pedro of Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama is an ancient oasis in the world's driest desert, the Atacama Desert. Inhabited since pre-Columbian times by the AtacameƱo or Lickanantay people, it served as a key caravan and ceremonial hub. With the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, it became a small agricultural and religious settlement, preserving its adobe architecture and cultural heritage. Its ecosystem is extreme, marked by saline soils, minimal rainfall, and wide temperature fluctuations. Vegetation includes hardy species such as llareta, tamarugo trees, and resilient cacti adapted to arid conditions. Wildlife features vicuƱas, culpeo foxes, Andean flamingos, and migratory birds inhabiting salt flats and high-altitude lagoons. This fragile ecosystem depends on underground water sources, making conservation essential amid increasing tourism pressures and the impacts of climate change on this unique environment.

The Puritama Hot Springs

The Puritama Hot Springs, located in an Andean canyon near San Pedro de Atacama, are a series of thermal pools formed by geothermal waters emerging at about 33 °C. Ancestrally used by AtacameƱo communities for their healing properties, they were later adapted for tourism during the 20th century. Surrounded by high-altitude vegetation such as hardy grasses and native shrubs, the area supports wildlife adapted to arid conditions, including birds and small mammals. Today, they are a renowned natural attraction blending history, wellness, and a unique desert ecosystem.
