Cuzco

Cusco, located in southern Peru, was the magnificent capital of the Inca Empire and remains one of South America's most significant historical and cultural destinations. According to tradition, it was founded by Manco CƔpac and reached its greatest prosperity between the 13th and 16th centuries, before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Its historic center, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases remarkable Inca stone architecture seamlessly blended with colonial churches and elegant Spanish buildings. Surrounded by the Andes Mountains, Cusco features a diverse highland ecosystem of inter Andean valleys, Andean forests, and high altitude grasslands known as puna. Its flora includes queƱua trees, molle, cantuta flowers, orchids, and numerous medicinal plants valued since ancient times. The region's wildlife includes the Andean condor, vicuƱas, llamas, alpacas, vizcachas, Andean foxes, and an impressive variety of birds and butterflies. Today, Cusco proudly preserves its Indigenous traditions, colorful festivals, and extraordinary archaeological heritage, reflecting the enduring legacy of the ancient Inca civilization.

Cusco's Main Square

The Cusco's Main Square, located in the historic center, was the core of the Inca Empire, originally called Huacaypata. It hosted important religious ceremonies, festivals, and political events. After the Spanish arrival in the 16th century, the square was transformed, with churches such as the Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus built over former Inca palaces. Today, it is a lively space surrounded by colonial architecture, where history, culture, and tourism converge, serving as a venue for traditional celebrations and a main gathering point in Cusco.
