The Chocolate Hills, located on the island of Bohol in the Philippines, are among the country's most iconic natural landmarks. Formed millions of years ago through the uplift of ancient coral and limestone deposits, followed by centuries of erosion caused by rain and wind, these more than 1,200 cone shaped hills turn brown during the dry season, resembling giant chocolate mounds. Recognized as a National Geological Monument, they represent an important natural and tourism heritage site. Their ecosystem includes secondary forests, grasslands, and tropical vegetation featuring bamboo, ferns, palms, and native trees. The area supports diverse wildlife, including endemic birds, butterflies, reptiles, small mammals, and numerous insect species. Nearby forests are also home to the endangered Philippine tarsier, one of the world's smallest primates. The remarkable combination of unique geology, rich biodiversity, and ongoing conservation efforts makes the Chocolate Hills a valuable ecological sanctuary and a lasting symbol of the Philippines' natural heritage.
