Trujillo and Chan Chan

The city of Trujillo, known as the "City of Eternal Spring," features a mild climate supporting fertile valleys near the coastal desert. Its surroundings include carob trees, reeds, and wildlife such as seabirds and coastal foxes. Nearby lies Chan Chan, capital of the Chimú kingdom (9th–15th centuries), built from adobe. Its arid ecosystem relied on advanced irrigation canals. Today, both places illustrate human adaptation to desert environments and northern Peru's rich pre-Columbian cultural heritage.

Trujillo and Chan Chan

The city of Trujillo, known as the "City of Eternal Spring," developed over fertile valleys shaped by pre-Hispanic cultures and Spanish colonization. Nearby lies Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the Americas and capital of the Chimú kingdom between the 9th and 15th centuries. Its ecosystem is a coastal desert, with minimal rainfall but nourished by rivers such as the Moche. Flora includes reeds, carob trees, and cacti; fauna features seabirds, coastal foxes, and adapted reptiles. This environment enabled agricultural systems through irrigation canals, reflecting a sophisticated interaction between humans and nature.

Trujillo and Chan Chan

The city of Trujillo, founded in 1534 by Diego de Almagro, became a major colonial hub in northern Peru, known for its well-preserved viceregal architecture and proximity to the Pacific coast. Nearby lies Chan Chan, the ancient capital of the Chimú Kingdom, built around the 9th century and recognized as the largest adobe city in the Americas. Its ecological setting blends coastal desert, wetlands, and fertile valleys nourished by seasonal rivers. Local flora includes reeds, algarrobo trees, and cacti adapted to arid conditions. The fauna features migratory birds such as herons and flamingos, along with small mammals and reptiles. This ecosystem reflects a long-standing human–environment interaction, especially through Chimú hydraulic systems. Today, it faces pressures from urban expansion and climate change impacts.

Dragon's Huaca

Dragon's Huaca, also called Rainbow Huaca, is an adobe archaeological site in La Esperanza district, on the outskirts of Trujillo and near Chan Chan. It is associated with the Chimú culture and served as a ceremonial and administrative center. Its walls preserve reliefs of anthropomorphic figures and motifs that suggest a rainbow and mythical beings. The structure includes ramps, platforms, and storage rooms, reflecting the religious and economic organization of Peru's pre-Hispanic northern coast.
