Humahuaca Creek

The Humahuaca Creek is a mountainous valley in northwestern Argentina, shaped by the Grande River and inhabited for over 10,000 years. It served as a vital pre-Hispanic trade corridor and later became part of the Spanish colonial Royal Road. In 2003, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural and scenic significance. Its ecosystem is arid and high-altitude, with extreme climate conditions. Vegetation includes cacti, shrubs, and drought-resistant plants. Wildlife features llamas, guanacos, Andean foxes, and birds such as the condor. Biodiversity is adapted to low water availability and mineral-rich soils. The long interaction between human communities and the environment has shaped agricultural terraces, routes, and settlements, forming a unique cultural landscape that blends history, tradition, and ecological balance in a remarkable natural setting.

Solar Train of the Creek

The Solar Train of the Creek is an innovative tourist railway in the Humahuaca Creek, inaugurated in 2024 after decades of railway abandonment. It revives a historic branch of the Belgrano Railway, originally active in the early 20th century and closed in the 1990s. Reconstruction began in 2017 to promote sustainable tourism. Powered by lithium batteries charged with solar energy, it is the first of its kind in Latin America. The train travels through Andean landscapes between VolcƔn and MaimarƔ, blending modern technology with UNESCO-recognized cultural and natural heritage.
