The fauna is diverse, featuring the Andean condor, white-tailed deer, puma, and several endemic amphibians sensitive to climate change. The ecosystem of Cajas is essential for water supply to Cuenca, regulating watersheds and capturing moisture from Pacific winds. Paredones de Molleturo
Paredones de Molleturo, located within Cajas National Park in Azuay Province, Ecuador, is an important pre-Hispanic archaeological site associated with the Qhapaq Ćan, or Inca Trail. This ancient tambo served as a resting and control point between the highlands and the coast. It is believed to have been used first by the CaƱari people and later by the Incas as a strategic hub for travel and trade. Its stone structures reflect Andean engineering adapted to a mountainous environment. Surrounded by pĆ”ramo landscapes and lakes, the site holds significant historical, cultural, and ecological value within the Cajas ecosystem.
