Fortaleza de Santa Teresa, located in the department of Rocha, Uruguay, is an eighteenth-century military fortress built by the Portuguese and later occupied by the Spanish to control the border region. Today it is part of Santa Teresa National Park, surrounded by dunes, pine forests, and native plant species. Its ecosystem supports wildlife such as foxes, capybaras, coastal birds, and small reptiles. The vegetation includes grasslands and scrub adapted to the coastal environment, preserving significant historical and natural value in the Atlantic region with strong conservation and tourism importance now.

Wildlife includes foxes, capybaras in nearby wetlands, birds of prey, seagulls, and small reptiles. The protected area preserves biodiversity and offers important coastal conservation landscapes with trails and natural scenic environments supporting conservation and sustainable tourism activities in region today.

Fortaleza de Santa Teresa

Fortaleza de Santa Teresa is a historic fortress located in the department of Rocha, Uruguay, within Santa Teresa National Park. It was originally built by the Portuguese in the eighteenth century, around 1762, and later occupied and modified by Spanish forces. Its main purpose was to serve as a strategic defense point along the contested border between colonial empires in the RĆ­o de la Plata region. The fortress features stone walls, bastions, and defensive ditches, many of which have been carefully restored. The surrounding environment forms part of a rich coastal ecosystem that includes grasslands, dunes, and forests of pine and eucalyptus trees. Wildlife in the area includes foxes, capybaras, birds of prey, black-necked swans, and various marine species along the Atlantic coast. This combination of historical heritage and natural diversity makes it an important cultural and ecological destination in Uruguay. The park also supports conservation and environmental education efforts for visitors programs.



Punta del Diablo 

Punta del Diablo, located in Rocha near the Fortaleza de Santa Teresa, is a former fishing village that became a coastal tourist destination in Uruguay.
