The Serena and the Elqui Valley
The Serena, located in the Coquimbo Region of Chile, is one of the country's oldest cities, founded in 1544. Its history reflects Spanish colonial influence, neocolonial architecture, and its importance as a coastal hub. Together with the Elqui Valley, it forms a distinctive semi-arid ecosystem characterized by clear skies, low humidity, and strong solar radiation. Native flora includes algarrobo trees, quisco cactus, chaƱar shrubs, and drought-resistant scrublands. The fauna consists of foxes, lizards, birds of prey, and small rodents adapted to desert conditions. The Elqui Valley is also known for its vineyards producing pisco, traditional terrace agriculture, and unique biodiversity shaped by the desert and mountain environment. The region is internationally recognized for astronomical observatories due to its exceptionally clear skies. This environment blends cultural heritage, scientific value, and natural resilience in a fragile but balanced ecosystem that supports both local communities and tourism and long term environmental conservation efforts.

Mamalluca Observatory
The Mamalluca Observatory is located in the Elqui Valley, near VicuƱa and about 70 km from La Serena, Chile. It was inaugurated in 1998 as the country's first tourist observatory, promoted by the municipality of VicuƱa to take advantage of the region's clear skies and low light pollution. It offers guided night tours where visitors observe stars, planets, and the Milky Way through telescopes. The Elqui Valley is known for its dry climate, mountain landscapes, and pisco tradition. Mamalluca combines science, education, and astro-tourism, becoming an iconic destination in northern Chile for learning and stargazing experiences.
