Carved over millions of years by the Blyde River, it features towering cliffs, waterfalls, and remarkable rock formations such as Bourke's Luck Potholes. Historically, the region was crossed by indigenous communities and later explored during the gold rush era. Its diverse ecosystem includes forests, grasslands, and subtropical vegetation supporting baboons, antelopes, eagles, monkeys, occasional hippos, reptiles, and numerous bird species, creating exceptional biodiversity and natural beauty.

Its geological history began millions of years ago as the Blyde River carved through ancient sandstone and quartzite formations. Its lush subtropical vegetation makes it unique among the world's major canyons. Outstanding attractions include Bourke's Luck Potholes, remarkable cylindrical rock formations sculpted by swirling water, as well as famous viewpoints such as God's Window and the Three Rondavels, offering breathtaking panoramic scenery. Historically, the area was inhabited by indigenous communities before becoming an important destination during the nineteenth century gold rush. Today, it forms part of the renowned Mpumalanga Panorama Route and provides a protected habitat for antelope, baboons, eagles, hippos, and an exceptional variety of native plant species, making it a premier destination for ecotourism, photography, and nature conservation.



Lisbon Falls

Lisbon Falls is the tallest waterfall in Mpumalanga Province, plunging approximately 94 meters into a lush gorge below. Named after the Portuguese city of Lisbon during the nineteenth century gold rush, it reflects the region's rich historical heritage. Located along the renowned Panorama Route near Blyde River Canyon, the waterfall is surrounded by indigenous forests, ferns, and abundant native vegetation. Its ecosystem provides habitat for numerous bird species, small mammals, and diverse plant life. Scenic viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramic views, making Lisbon Falls one of South Africa's most iconic and frequently photographed natural attractions.
