Santiago
Santiago, founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia, is Chile's capital and its main political, cultural, and economic center. Set in a valley between the Andes and the Coastal Range, it has a Mediterranean ecosystem with hot, dry summers and rainy winters. Native flora includes quillay, boldo, and espino, along with urban parks and gardens. Nearby fauna includes thrushes, doves, degus, and culpeo foxes. The city blends colonial history, modern development, and Andean biodiversity within a landscape shaped by hills, rivers, and seasonal contrasts.

Santiago

Santiago
Santiago is the capital of Chile located in the central valley near the Andes Mountains. Founded in 1541, it has developed as the political, economic and cultural center. Its urban ecosystem blends with Mediterranean conditions, featuring dry summers and rainy winters. Native flora includes species such as quillay, peumo, litre and espino adapted to drought. Urban and peri-urban fauna includes tenca birds, diuca finches, culpeo foxes and lizards. Surrounding hills preserve sclerophyllous scrublands and areas of Andean biodiversity. Urban growth has altered the landscape, though parks and reserves protect its natural heritage and ecology. This balance faces challenges from pollution and rapid urban expansion in the metropolitan area today increasingly.

Urban fauna includes birds such as sparrows, chimango caracaras, and lapwings, along with small adapted mammals. The surrounding pre-Andean foothills preserve greater biodiversity and endemic species. Santiago's ecosystem reflects a strong interaction between human activity and nature, facing environmental challenges such as air pollution, water scarcity, and heat islands, while ongoing conservation efforts and sustainable planning aim to improve environmental quality and resilience for future generations currently in progress.
