Anja Reserve
The Anja Community Reserve, located about 13 kilometers south of Ambalavao in Madagascar's Haute Matsiatra Region, is one of the country's finest examples of successful community based conservation. Established in the late 1990s by local residents, the reserve protects a remarkable landscape of granite outcrops, dry forests, and endemic vegetation while creating sustainable income through ecotourism. Its greatest attraction is a thriving population of ring tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), living alongside chameleons, geckos, native birds, and numerous insect species. The flora features pachypodiums, aloes, wild orchids, fig trees, and many drought resistant plants adapted to Madagascar's unique highland environment. Well maintained trails lead visitors to caves, scenic viewpoints, and impressive rock formations of significant geological interest. The reserve also safeguards natural springs that support local biodiversity. Anja demonstrates how active community participation can successfully protect Madagascar's extraordinary natural heritage while promoting environmental education, sustainable development, and long term benefits for future generations.
