Zeelandia Fortress
Fort Zeelandia, located in Anping, Tainan, Taiwan, was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1624 and 1634 as the military, administrative, and commercial headquarters of the Dutch colonial presence on the island. Strategically positioned overlooking the coast, it controlled maritime trade routes linking China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, becoming one of the region's most significant trading centers. Its massive brick walls, defensive bastions, and storage facilities represent European military architecture adapted to Taiwan's tropical environment. In 1662, the fortress was captured by Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong), who expelled the Dutch and established a new era in Taiwanese history. Over the centuries, the structure experienced damage from warfare, erosion, and natural disasters before undergoing extensive restoration. Today, Fort Zeelandia functions as a historical museum displaying archaeological artifacts, colonial documents, and interpretive exhibitions that illustrate Taiwan's multicultural past, making it one of the island's most important and well preserved historical landmarks.
