Futaleufú
Futaleufu is a commune located along the Carretera Austral in Chilean Patagonia, near the border with Argentina. Its name comes from the Mapudungun language, meaning "big river," referring to the Futaleufú River, world-famous for its turquoise waters and world-class whitewater rafting and kayaking rapids. Its modern history began in the early 20th century with settlers from Chiloé who established rural communities in the area. Surrounded by mountains, native forests, and lakes, Futaleufú's economy has traditionally relied on livestock and forestry, but today tourism especially adventure tourism plays a central role along Chile's iconic Route 7.
