Drakensberg

The Drakensberg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, form South Africa's highest mountain range and are renowned for their rugged peaks, dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and spectacular waterfalls. For centuries, they served as a refuge for the San people, whose remarkable rock art remains preserved today. The ecosystem features alpine grasslands, montane forests, and clear rivers supporting exceptional biodiversity. Native flora includes proteas, heathers, and wild orchids, while wildlife includes antelope, baboons, eagles, bearded vultures, jackals, and many endemic species, making this range an outstanding natural sanctuary.

Drakensberg

The Drakensberg, meaning "Dragon Mountains," is the highest mountain range in South Africa, stretching for more than 1,000 kilometers along much of the border with Lesotho. Its dramatic peaks rise above 3,400 meters, surrounded by deep valleys, towering cliffs, waterfalls, and vast alpine grasslands. The range was formed over 180 million years ago through volcanic activity and millions of years of erosion, creating one of Africa's most spectacular landscapes. The region includes the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional natural beauty and more than 35,000 ancient rock paintings created by the San people. Besides its remarkable geological and cultural significance, the mountains provide habitat for diverse wildlife, including endemic plants, rare birds, and mountain mammals. Today, the Drakensberg is a premier destination for hiking, rock climbing, birdwatching, photography, and outdoor adventures, attracting visitors from around the world throughout every season.

Alexandria Dune Field

Shaped over thousands of years by wind and ocean currents, it represents an outstanding geological and ecological landscape. Its scenic trails showcase shifting dunes, unique coastal scenery, and remarkable plant species specially adapted to sandy environments. The area provides habitat for diverse birds, reptiles, insects, and small mammals, making it an important refuge for biodiversity while helping protect fragile coastal ecosystems and natural environmental balance.
