Developed as a forestry region during the Japanese colonial era, it preserves ancient cypress and cedar forests, mist covered mountains, and the iconic sunrise above the Sea of Clouds. Its ecosystem supports Formosan sambar deer, macaques, pheasants, and many endemic bird species. Native flora includes ferns, orchids, and centuries old trees, creating exceptional biodiversity that is safeguarded through long term environmental conservation and sustainable management efforts.

The Alishan National Scenic Area, located in the mountains of Chiayi County in central Taiwan, is one of the country's most celebrated natural destinations. Its tourism history began during the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945), when the renowned Alishan Forest Railway was built to transport valuable cypress and cedar timber. Over time, the region became protected for its exceptional landscapes and remarkable ecological diversity. Today, visitors admire its ancient forests, scenic hiking trails, seasonal cherry blossoms, rich wildlife, and breathtaking sunrises above the famous Sea of Clouds. Alishan also preserves an important cultural heritage through the traditions of the indigenous Tsou people, whose customs remain an integral part of the region today.

Sister Ponds

Sister Ponds are among the most iconic attractions within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area in Chiayi County, Taiwan. These two small ponds, linked by forest trails and surrounded by ancient cypress and cedar trees, are closely associated with the legends and traditions of the indigenous Tsou people. Their cool, humid environment supports remarkable biodiversity, including mountain birds, amphibians, ferns, mosses, and native woodland vegetation. Protected as part of the Alishan ecosystem, the ponds preserve valuable wetland habitats while offering visitors a peaceful landscape that reflects the harmonious blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and ecological conservation.
