Casapueblo / Museum & Workshop

Casapueblo, located in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, is an iconic building created by artist Carlos PÔez Vilaró, designed as a house, workshop, and museum. Its organic architecture blends with the Atlantic coastal cliffs. The surrounding ecosystem features coastal vegetation such as grasses, wind-resistant shrubs, and native species adapted to saline soils. Wildlife includes seabirds like gulls, cormorants, and hawks, along with nearby sea lions along the shoreline. The site represents harmony between art, nature, and the maritime landscape of Uruguay's coast. It is a major cultural and tourist attraction site today.

Casapueblo / Museum & Workshop

Casapueblo / Museum & Workshop is an iconic structure located in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, created by artist Carlos PÔez Vilaró. It began in 1958 as a small wooden shack called "La Pionera" and gradually evolved over decades into a sculptural, inhabitable building with no straight lines. Today it functions as a museum, workshop, hotel, and art gallery. It is set within a coastal ecosystem influenced by the Río de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean, characterized by cliffs, rocky beaches, and wind-shaped vegetation. Local flora includes grasses, pine trees, and native coastal shrubs adapted to sandy soils and salty winds. The fauna features seabirds, gulls, sea lions, and small reptiles living along the protected shoreline and nearby waters.

Casapueblo / Museum & Workshop

Casapueblo / Museum & Workshop is an iconic structure located in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, created by artist Carlos PÔez Vilaró. Construction began in 1958 as a "habitable sculpture" built without formal architectural plans, inspired by the hornero bird's nest and Mediterranean coastal architecture. Its white, organic forms, winding passages, and terraces blend dramatically with the Atlantic Ocean cliffs. The Museum & Workshop houses the artist's paintings, ceramics, and sculptures, along with exhibition rooms and viewing platforms. The surrounding ecosystem belongs to Uruguay's Atlantic coastal zone, characterized by grassland vegetation and species adapted to strong ocean winds, including low shrubs, native grasses, and salt-tolerant plants. Local fauna includes seabirds such as gulls, cormorants, and herons, as well as small coastal mammals and reptiles. This natural environment enhances the artistic and spiritual atmosphere of Casapueblo, especially during its famous sunsets over the sea, which connect art, landscape, and nature in a unique experience.

Portezuelo Beach

Portezuelo Beach, located along its sheltered bay near Punta Ballena, is a long stretch of fine sand and calm waters, well known for spectacular sunsets. Its modern development began in 1945 under Spanish architect Antoni Bonet i Castellana, gaining popularity as a seaside resort in the 1980s. Overlooking the beach stands Casapueblo, the museum and workshop created by Carlos PĆ”ez Vilaró, begun in 1958 as his home and studio. This organic, whitewashed structure blends art, architecture, and coastal landscape, becoming one of Uruguay's most iconic cultural landmarks.
