Sun & the Moon Lake

Sun and the Moon Lake, located in Nantou County in central Taiwan, is the island's largest natural freshwater lake and one of its most iconic tourist destinations. Its name comes from its distinctive shape: the eastern section resembles a round sun, while the western side resembles a crescent moon. Surrounded by forested subtropical mountains, the lake has long been the homeland of the indigenous Thao people, whose traditions and cultural heritage remain an important part of the area. During the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945), major irrigation and hydroelectric projects transformed the region and supported its economic development. Today, the lake blends remarkable natural beauty with historical and spiritual significance through its temples, scenic cycling routes, hiking trails, and boat cruises. Its diverse ecosystem supports native fish, abundant birdlife, and lush vegetation, making Sun Moon Lake an important conservation area and a celebrated example of Taiwan's commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental preservation.

Wenwu Temple

The Wenwu Temple is one of the most iconic landmarks overlooking Sun Moon Lake in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. Built during the 20th century to replace temples submerged by a hydroelectric project, it honors Confucius, the God of Literature, and Guan Gong, the legendary symbol of loyalty and righteousness. Its traditional Chinese architecture features elegant terraces with spectacular lake views. Surrounded by subtropical forests, the temple is part of an ecosystem rich in native vegetation, colorful butterflies, and diverse birdlife, encouraging environmental conservation and appreciation of Taiwan's natural heritage.
