Sokehs Rock

Sokehs Rock is a striking basaltic promontory located on the Sokehs Peninsula of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. This remarkable natural landmark also holds significant historical importance, as it was the site of the Sokehs Rebellion of 1910–1911, a pivotal event during the German colonial administration. Rising steeply above the surrounding coastline, the rock provides habitat for native birds, reptiles, insects, and other wildlife typical of tropical island forests. The surrounding landscape features lush rainforest with ferns, palms, and indigenous trees that help stabilize the soil and maintain ecological balance. Nearby mangrove forests and coral reefs support diverse marine life, including colorful reef fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other coastal species, making the area an outstanding example of Micronesia's rich biodiversity.

Sokehs Rock Trail

The Sokehs Rock Trail on the island of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, circles the dramatic volcanic formation of Sokehs Rock, a site of major historical and ecological importance. During German and later Japanese colonial rule, the area experienced labor tensions and administrative control. In 1910, the Sokehs Rebellion erupted as a local uprising against colonial authorities. Today, the trail passes through lush tropical rainforest with endemic species, seabirds, and dense vegetation, reflecting the island's biodiversity and the enduring cultural resilience of the Pohnpeian people across generations and over time.
