Independence Square and Citadel Gate

Independence Square and Citadel Gate is the historic heart of Montevideo, established in the 19th century over former colonial fortifications that once separated the old city. It features the Artigas Mausoleum and iconic buildings. Nearby, the Puerta de la Ciudadela is the sole remaining gate of the 18th-century Spanish walls. Although urban, the square includes ornamental trees, lawns, and birdlife such as pigeons and sparrows. Its ecosystem reflects a balance between adapted nature and continuous human activity in a dynamic city environment.

Independence Square is Montevideo's main civic square, established in the 19th century on the former boundary between the colonial and modern city. At its center stands the monument to JosĆ© Gervasio Artigas, a symbol of national identity. Nearby, the Citadel Gate remains as a fragment of the original fortress wall that once protected the city. The area hosts an urban ecosystem with ornamental trees, lawns, and birds such as pigeons and sparrows. Although wildlife is limited, the green space supports environmental balance by providing shade, moderating temperature, and offering habitat for species adapted to city life.

Independence Square and Citadel Gate

Independence Square is the main civic square of Uruguay's capital, marking the transition between the Old City and the modern expansion. Established in the 19th century after the demolition of colonial walls, it became a political and symbolic center, highlighted by the Artigas Mausoleum. Nearby stands the Citadel Gate, the only remaining fragment of the 18th-century Spanish fortifications, restored as a monumental gateway. The area features a managed urban ecosystem with ornamental vegetation such as palm trees, tipu trees, and lawns. Its fauna is typical of city environments, including pigeons, sparrows, and small insects adapted to human activity. Although not a natural ecosystem, it plays important environmental roles by moderating the microclimate, filtering pollutants, and providing habitat for urban biodiversity, blending history, architecture, and nature within one of Montevideo's most iconic public spaces.

Montevideo Cathedral

The Montevideo Cathedral, officially the Metropolitan Cathedral of Montevideo, is among the city's oldest religious buildings. Its origins date back to the 18th century, when it replaced an earlier church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Consecrated in 1804, it has hosted key religious and civic events in Uruguay's history. The architecture blends neoclassical and Baroque influences, featuring a balanced and elegant faƧade. Inside, it preserves altars, sculptures, and the remains of notable historical figures. Located across from Plaza Matriz, it remains a central spiritual and cultural landmark in Montevideo's historic district today.
