Stone Money

Stone Money consists of ancient carved shell stones traditionally used as ceremonial currency and symbols of status in several communities across the Federated States of Micronesia. Rather than serving as everyday money, these objects represented alliances, inheritance, and important social agreements passed through generations. They demonstrate remarkable craftsmanship and reflect the enduring cultural traditions of the Pacific Islands. Their surrounding island environment supports coral reefs, mangrove forests, tropical woodlands, and exceptional biodiversity, including reef fish, sea turtles, coastal birds, and numerous marine species that thrive in pristine waters.

Stone Money

Stone Money, known as Rai stones, represents one of the most significant cultural symbols of the Federated States of Micronesia and the wider Micronesian region. These large circular limestone disks, featuring a central hole, were primarily carved on distant islands and transported across the ocean through remarkable traditional voyages. Their value depended on each stone's history, size, origin, and the challenges encountered during transportation. Today, they serve mainly as ceremonial and cultural heritage objects, symbolizing prestige, family alliances, and community agreements. Their island environment supports vibrant coral reefs, mangrove forests, tropical woodlands, and exceptionally rich marine biodiversity, reflecting the ecological diversity of the western Pacific Ocean.

Stone Money

Stone Money, known as Rai, is among the most significant cultural symbols associated with the Federated States of Micronesia through its long-standing historical connections with the neighboring island of Yap. These massive circular limestone disks, carved with a central hole, were transported across the ocean from distant quarries during remarkable seafaring expeditions. Their value was determined not only by size but also by their history, origin, and the challenges involved in bringing them home. Rather than serving as everyday currency, Rai stones represented social status, family alliances, ceremonial exchanges, and community traditions. The island environments where these cultural treasures are preserved feature tropical forests, mangrove wetlands, coral reefs, and seagrass meadows that support exceptional biodiversity. Sea turtles, colorful reef fish, mollusks, seabirds, and diverse coral species thrive within these interconnected ecosystems, highlighting the enduring relationship between Micronesian communities, their cultural heritage, and the rich natural environments that have sustained island life for centuries.

O'Keefe Island

O'Keefe Island, located in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia, is named after Irish-American trader David O'Keefe, who during the nineteenth century organized the transport of the famous stone money from Palau to Yap using modern sailing vessels. His achievements became an important part of the region's cultural and economic history. The island is surrounded by coral reefs, mangrove forests, and clear tropical waters inhabited by reef fish, sea turtles, and numerous marine invertebrates. These diverse ecosystems support rich biodiversity while helping preserve the ecological balance of the Micronesian archipelago.
