Ciudad Vieja

Ciudad Vieja is Montevideo's historic core, established in the 18th century as a fortified Spanish colonial settlement. Its streets preserve neoclassical, art deco, and colonial architecture, reflecting urban evolution. Though highly urbanized, its coastal ecosystem supports adaptable species such as pigeons, sparrows, and urban bats, along with ornamental plants and salt-tolerant trees. Proximity to the RĂo de la Plata attracts occasional seabirds. Today, it blends cultural heritage, port activity, and urban green spaces that sustain limited yet resilient biodiversity within a dynamic coastal city environment.

Ciudad Vieja

Ciudad Vieja, the historic core of Montevideo, originated in the 18th century as a fortified Spanish colonial town. It preserves a colonial street grid, central squares, and landmark buildings. Its ecosystem is urban-coastal, shaped by the RĂo de la Plata, with saline winds influencing vegetation. Common flora includes ornamental trees such as jacarandas, tipu trees, and palms, along with hardy ground plants adapted to compact soils. Fauna is typical of dense cities: pigeons, sparrows, and chimango hawks, with occasional coastal birds like gulls. Despite heavy urbanization, small habitats persist in plazas and waterfront edges, where biodiversity, human activity, and heritage coexist in Uruguay.

Ciudad Vieja

The Ciudad Vieja de Montevideo is the historic core of Montevideo, founded in 1724 as a Spanish fortified settlement. Once enclosed by defensive walls until the 19th century, it preserves a colonial street layout alongside neoclassical and eclectic architecture, with landmarks such as Plaza Matriz and the port. Its development mirrors Uruguay's commercial growth, immigration waves, and cultural shifts. Ecologically, its location along the RĂo de la Plata forms part of an urban coastal ecosystem. Vegetation is mostly introduced and ornamental—plane trees, jacarandas, and palms—adapted to saline winds and urban conditions. Fauna includes urban birds such as pigeons, gulls, and thrushes, along with occasional coastal species. Nearby waters support fish, mollusks, and migratory birds. Today, Ciudad Vieja blends preserved heritage with vibrant cultural life and tourism, balancing architectural conservation with ongoing urban environmental pressures.

Plaza Independencia

The Plaza Independencia is Montevideo's main civic square, marking the transition between the Old City and the modern urban area. It emerged in the 19th century after the demolition of colonial walls, symbolizing openness and national progress. At its center stands the mausoleum of José Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay's national hero, beneath his equestrian monument. Surrounded by iconic buildings such as Palacio Salvo and Teatro Solís, the square reflects the country's architectural and political evolution. Historically, it has served as a central stage for celebrations, protests, and official ceremonies shaping Uruguay's national identity.
