Historically inhabited by indigenous peoples, the region expanded during the 19th-century rubber boom. Its ecosystem hosts remarkable biodiversity, including towering trees, orchids, and medicinal plants. Wildlife features jaguars, pink river dolphins, and thousands of bird species. The Amazon River plays a vital role in regulating global climate but faces growing threats from deforestation and human activities.

Amazonas & Manaus

The region of Amazonas and its capital, Manaus, lie at the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, the largest tropical forest on Earth. Historically, it was inhabited by indigenous peoples long before European colonization. During the 19th-century rubber boom, Manaus became a wealthy commercial hub, symbolized by landmarks like the Amazon Theatre. Its ecosystem is among the most diverse in the world, shaped by dense rainforest, vast rivers such as the Amazon, and seasonal floodplains. The flora includes towering trees like kapok and rubber trees, along with orchids and medicinal plants. The fauna is equally abundant, featuring jaguars, pink river dolphins, sloths, monkeys, and colorful birds like macaws. This fragile ecological balance plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate, storing carbon, and supporting countless species, many of which remain scientifically undiscovered.

Established in 1980, it safeguards over 2 million hectares of pristine Amazonian ecosystems. Its biodiversity includes jaguars, pink river dolphins, birds, and thousands of plant species. It is part of the Central Amazon Conservation Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historically, the region has been inhabited by traditional communities relying on the JaĆŗ River and its natural resources.
