The Calafate and The Chalten
The Calafate and the Chaltén, in Argentine Patagonia, are closely tied to Los Glaciares National Park. El Calafate began in the early 20th century as a ranching outpost, later growing through tourism, especially around Perito Moreno Glacier. El Chaltén, founded in 1985, is Argentina's trekking capital. Their ecosystem blends steppe, Andean forest, and ice fields. Vegetation features lenga and ñire trees; wildlife includes guanacos, huemul deer, condors, and foxes. Harsh, windy climates shape resilient, highly adapted biodiversity.

The Calafate and The Chalten
The Calafate and the Chaltén, in Argentine Patagonia, developed as key gateways for exploration and tourism near Los Glaciares National Park, established in 1937. El Calafate expanded along Lake Argentino, closely linked to Perito Moreno Glacier, while El Chaltén was founded in 1985 as a trekking village at the base of Mount Fitz Roy. Their ecosystem includes Patagonian steppe, subantarctic forests, and vast ice fields. Wildlife features guanacos, foxes, condors, and endangered huemul deer, while vegetation includes coirón grasses, lenga, and ñire trees. The cold, windy climate shapes resilient biodiversity and remarkable scenic landscapes.

The Calafate and The Chalten
The Calafate and The Chaltén are two iconic gateways to southern Argentine Patagonia, both linked to Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site created in 1937 and recognized in 1981. El Calafate grew as a service town on the shores of Lake Argentino, later becoming a major hub for glacier tourism and access to Perito Moreno. El Chaltén was founded in 1985 as a geopolitical decision and developed into a mountain village known as Argentina's trekking capital. Their landscapes combine lenga, ñire, and guindo forests with calafate shrubs, notro, coirón, and neneo in the steppe. Wildlife includes condors, black-chested buzzard-eagles, Patagonian woodpeckers, huemuls, red foxes, and pumas. The wider ecosystem blends Andean-Patagonian forest, steppe, and massive ice fields, forming a cold, windy, highly biodiverse environment of great conservation value.

Perito Moreno Glacier
The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most impressive ice formations in Argentine Patagonia, located in Los Glaciares National Park. It is known for its unusual continuous advance, unlike many retreating glaciers worldwide. Its massive ice flow originates from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and frequently produces dramatic calving events into Lake Argentino. It was named after explorer Francisco Moreno. The glacier is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major destination for scientific study and tourism in Argentina. It attracts visitors throughout the year from around world globally.
