Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, developed between the sea and mountains of southeastern Brazil. Its iconic landscape blends Guanabara Bay with granite peaks such as Sugarloaf and Corcovado. The dominant ecosystem is the Atlantic Forest, one of the most biodiverse and threatened biomes on Earth. Its humid forests shelter species like capuchin monkeys, sloths, toucans, and numerous amphibians and insects. The flora features bromeliads, orchids, and trees like pau-brasil, historically significant for trade. Protected areas such as Tijuca National Park demonstrate forest regeneration after colonial deforestation. Coastal ecosystems include mangroves, restingas, and beaches that support seabirds and diverse fish populations. Despite intense urbanization, Rio preserves a remarkable balance between natural and urban environments, highlighting its ecological importance and cultural identity shaped by centuries of human and environmental interaction.

Cristo Redentor

The Cristo Redentor is one of the world's most iconic monuments, standing atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated in 1931, it was designed by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski. The statue rises 30 meters tall, symbolizing Christian faith and Brazilian hospitality. Built of reinforced concrete and covered in soapstone, it overlooks the city's striking natural and urban landscape. In 2007, it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, reinforcing its global cultural and touristic significance.
