Chimborazo Lodge

Chimborazo Lodge is a mountain accommodation located on the slopes of Chimborazo Volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. It has become a strategic base for hikers and climbers exploring the high-altitude environment. Its history is tied to community-based tourism and environmental conservation, involving local Andean communities. The lodge offers panoramic volcanic landscapes, wildlife such as vicuƱas and llamas, and serves as a starting point for ascents and cultural experiences in Ecuador's highlands, supporting sustainable tourism and mountain research activities focused on conservation efforts and education initiatives.

Chimborazo Lodge

Chimborazo Lodge

Chimborazo Lodge is a mountain lodge at 4,000 meters above sea level, at the foot of Ecuador's Chimborazo volcano, in the historic Totorillas Valley beside the Chimborazo Faunal Production Reserve. Its story is tied to the old Tambo Totorillas rest stop, which served traders, travelers, explorers, and naturalists long before the railway arrived in 1908. The lodge now keeps that Andean memory alive with heated rooms, rustic mountain decor, and a warm, shelter like atmosphere. It also supports conservation of the pƔramo ecosystem and sustainable tourism, making it both a base for high-altitude adventures and a tribute to local history. From here, guests can look out over the volcano and nearby trails today.

Chimborazo Lodge

The Chimborazo Lodge is a mountain accommodation located at about 4,000 meters above sea level in the Totorillas Valley, at the base of Chimborazo Volcano in Ecuador. Its history is closely connected to the ancient Tambo de Totorillas, a resting place used since pre-Columbian times along important Andean trade routes. This site was part of the Inca road system (Qhapaq Ƒan), where travelers, traders, and Inca officials stopped during long journeys. During colonial and republican periods, it also hosted explorers and scientists such as Humboldt in the 19th century. The modern lodge was built on these historical foundations to preserve cultural heritage while offering alpine-style accommodation. It is surrounded by high altitude paramo ecosystems, known for their ecological fragility and biodiversity. Today, the lodge functions as a key acclimatization and adventure base for climbers attempting Chimborazo, while also promoting sustainable tourism and environmental conservation in the region.

Palmira Desert

The Palmira Desert, located on the slopes of VolcƔn Chimborazo in Ecuador, is a high-Andean landscape known for its arid appearance, volcanic soils, and sparse vegetation typical of dry paramo ecosystems. Despite its name, it is not a hot desert but a cold, high-altitude zone shaped by extreme weather, strong winds, and volcanic influence. Historically, this area has been inhabited and used by Indigenous communities for grazing llamas and alpacas. Its ecological significance lies in the adaptation of life to harsh conditions and its role as part of the broader Chimborazo ecosystem.
