Wanosato

Wanosato is a historic luxury ryokan located in the mountainous surroundings of Takayama, in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The property occupies a traditional Japanese wooden farmhouse more than a century old, carefully relocated and restored to preserve the rural architectural heritage of the Hida region. Its design reflects authentic Japanese living through thatched roofs, wooden beams, tatami rooms, and spaces inspired by the philosophy of wabi-sabi. Surrounded by forests, streams, and mountains, Wanosato represents the deep relationship between nature and culture that defines Hida. The area has long been recognized for its skilled craftsmen, especially master carpenters whose techniques contributed to the construction of temples and important historical buildings across Japan. Today, Wanosato provides a refined cultural experience combining traditional Japanese hospitality, regional cuisine, seasonal landscapes, and the peaceful atmosphere of the Japanese Alps. It preserves the spirit of old Japan while offering modern comfort.

Takayama Jinya

Takayama Jinya is the only surviving Edo-period government office (jinya) in Japan, located in Takayama. It served as the administrative center of the Tokugawa shogunate for the Hida region from the seventeenth century, managing rice taxes and local justice. Its wooden architecture reflects traditional building techniques designed to withstand the alpine climate. Ecologically, the surrounding area features cedar forests, mountain rivers, and the biodiversity of the Japanese Alps, shaping historical forestry and agriculture. It remains an important cultural heritage site and symbol of regional governance in Japan today.
