Hacienda La Ciénega

The Hacienda La Ciénega is one of Ecuador's oldest colonial estates, founded in 1695 on the Lasso plains along the Avenue of the Volcanoes. Built with volcanic stone, it belonged to aristocratic families such as the Marquis of Maenza and witnessed key historical events, including scientific visits by Alexander von Humboldt and independence-era movements. Surrounded by Cotopaxi and the Ilinizas, it blends colonial architecture, century-old gardens, and Andean heritage, and has operated as a historic hotel since 1981.

Hacienda La Ciénega

Hacienda La Ciénega, located along Ecuador's Avenue of the Volcanoes, is one of the country's oldest colonial estates. Construction began in 1695 under Matheo de la Escalera y Velasco, who built it with volcanic stone in the plains of Lasso. In the 18th century, it became home to aristocratic families and a site of historical relevance, hosting scientific visitors such as Alexander von Humboldt in 1802. The estate was also connected to Ecuador's independence movements. Surrounded by Cotopaxi and the Ilinizas volcanoes, it blends colonial architecture, century-old gardens, and Andean scenery. Since 1981, it has operated as a hotel, preserving its heritage and offering an authentic historical experience.

Hacienda La Ciénega

Hacienda La Ciénega is one of the most notable historic haciendas in Cotopaxi, along Ecuador's Avenue of the Volcanoes. Its origins date to 1695, when Matheo de la Escalera y Velasco chose the plains of Lasso to build the estate with volcanic stone. Over time, the property passed through a long family line, and it still preserves the calm, stately atmosphere of a colonial Andean residence. Surrounded by the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Ecuadorian highlands, it is closely associated with views of Cotopaxi and nearby peaks, which adds to its scenic appeal. Its old corridors, gardens, and chapel also reflect the rural life of the colonial period. More than a place to stay, it stands as a living reminder of rural heritage, colonial architecture, and social history in the former viceroyalty. Today, it blends heritage, scenery, and Ecuadorian hospitality in a setting that feels timeless.

Baños de Agua Santa

Baños de Agua Santa is a tourist city located in Tungurahua Province along Ecuador's Avenue of the Volcanoes, at the foothills of the Tungurahua volcano. Its name comes from its volcanic hot springs, famous for their healing properties. The city has no exact founding date, as it gradually developed through indigenous, Spanish, and mestizo settlements engaged in trade. It is also an important Catholic pilgrimage site linked to the Virgin of Agua Santa. Its history is strongly influenced by volcanic activity, including the 1999 evacuation. Today, it stands out for its waterfalls, natural beauty, and adventure tourism.
