Citadel Gate
The Citadel Gate is the last remaining element of the Spanish colonial fortress that once defended Montevideo's walled city in the 18th century. After the walls were demolished in 1877, the structure was dismantled and relocated until its reconstruction in 1959 near present-day Plaza Independencia. Today, it marks the entrance to the Old City. Nearby, the SolĆs Theatre, inaugurated in 1856, embodies the republic's cultural development with its neoclassical design and major artistic role. Together, both landmarks illustrate Montevideo's historical transition from fortified colony to modern capital.
